Greetings, my wicked darlings!

Editing and formatting Tales of the Macabre, Vol. 5 has taken up a huge amount of time. I miss writing. This has been delaying my new stories as it’s all about TotM 5 right now.

I’m hoping that this month we’ll have a cover reveal. I’ve got the ISBNs sorted and the drafts in KDP and BookVault, but every time I read through, I find more mistakes.

I know I’ve said in interviews that the best way to find a typo is to send your manuscript off to beta readers and a line editor, and do multiple read throughs before hitting publish. Then turn to page 69 and you’ll blimming find one straight away, but this is driving me insane.

I’m doing the read aloud read through at the moment. Most of the errors are repetitions of words within close proximity, contractions either missing or used inappropriately, or words that could be cut.

We are getting there…

Not long now, anyway.

Last month, I released short stories: The Last of the Kings (Read Online | Download ePub / PDF) and Full Beam (Read Online | Download ePub / PDF). Which was your favourite?

What I CAN reveal is the complete lineup for TotM 5:

  • The Better Half

  • The Doll House Killer

  • Full Beam

  • Barghest

  • Till Death Us Depart

  • The Taste of Sin

  • A Civic Duty

  • Leprechaun

  • Brides of Dracul

  • A Bunker Too Far

  • The Cold Dead Sea

  • Outpost U-819 Must Die!

  • The Last Hand

(With Respect as the free story in the back of the anthology)

Which story are you looking forward to the most?

I think this might be the strongest lineup yet in the TotM series, and if I can polish off the final editing snafus, then I reckon it’ll be the new top rated anthology in my collection.

Can you guess which volume is the current top rated anthology?

Right, well, back to editing.

Sweet screams,

Newt xx

Greetings, my wicked darlings!

What happened in July? The sun boiled my brain. That’s what happened.

I think I confused everyone by releasing a remake of my dark fantasy story, Shadow of the Wolf, with the same title and a suspiciously similar cover.

Was that a stupid idea? Absolutely. Will I learn from it? Deeply unlikely.

Let’s try again, this time with coffee:

Shadow of the Wolf: Dark Fantasy Edition

The original version. Lighter, more comedic, with a Templar based on a friend’s D&D character, which was itself inspired by The Tick.

Shadow of the Wolf: Medieval Horror Edition

The completely rewritten version. Grim, violent, and set during the Anarchy, when the forces of Empress Matilda battled Stephen of Blois. No, I can’t pronounce Blois either. I assume it is pronounced something like ‘blah’, being French. In the audio version, I will employ professional cowardice to avoid that word.

If you are still with me after all that bumf, then I applaud your tenacity and am grateful for your fortitude.

I also released two other stories, both novellas: Outpost U-819 Must DIE! (Read Online | Download ePub / PDF) and A Bunker Too Far (Read Online | Download ePub / PDF). Thank you to everyone who read them. They received a very warm welcome, you sick puppies.

Coming in August

  • Full Beam. A classic urban legend retold, involving a lonely road, a Mercedes, a van, and some aggressive use of headlights.

  • The Last of the Kings. Another uplifting tale in which members of the financial sector suffer entirely proportionate and regrettable consequences.

  • I have two particularly unpleasant contenders for the final slot. I have not yet decided which one you deserve, my wonderful little toads.

September’s newsletter will reveal the complete lineup for Tales of the Macabre, Vol. 5.

Thank you for reading the stories and telling me which ones you liked and which ones you didn’t. I select the anthology primarily by comparing the number of likes each story receives per hundred views, so every reaction genuinely affects the final lineup.

Sweet screams,

Newt xx

Missed July’s releases? You can read or download all three below.

A Bunker Too Far

(Read Online | Download ePub / PDF)

A World War II Horror Novella

A doomed mission. A Nazi bunker. A monstrous secret.

Deep in the forests outside Arnhem, Operation Market Garden is collapsing.

When Private Mike Taylor and the remnants of his section are cut off behind enemy lines, they discover a German bunker with a radio mast and no visible defenders.

With German armour moving towards the British flank and sunrise only hours away, the surviving soldiers must warn the British airborne force.

But the bunker has secrets of its own, and something buried beneath the concrete is far more dangerous than the enemy outside.

Outpost U-819 Must DIE!

(Read Online | Download ePub / PDF)

A Pulp Sci-fi Horror Novella

On the freezing, desolate world of Rokus IV, Outpost U-819 is a miserable assignment. Brilliant, bitter, and heavily medicated, Professor Isambelle Hawke has spent four years cataloguing space-lichen and despising every colleague unfortunate enough to share her oxygen.

When the outpost’s hyper-competitive scientists make the discovery of a lifetime, they lie, scheme, and betray one another to claim the credit.

As paranoia spreads and the base goes into lockdown, Isambelle is trapped in its claustrophobic corridors with a nightmare that learns, adapts, and kills.

Her only hope is the outpost’s uncompromising ex-marine security chief, a woman she cannot stand and may not be able to trust.

One thing is certain.

Outpost U-819 MUST DIE!

Shadow of the Wolf: Medieval Horror Edition

(Read Online | Download ePub / PDF)

A Medieval Horror Short Story

A starving village. A forbidden sacrifice. A savage monster.

Deep in the Welsh Marches, a desperate settlement hides behind a rotting palisade and bars its gate after sunset.

When Brother Angel, a fearsome Templar knight, arrives with Barnabus, a reluctant penitent spared from the gallows, they discover a village gripped by terror and bound to something ancient in the woods.

Now, with the moon rising and an old debt coming due, Barnabus and Angel must break the pact before the shadow of the wolf claims them all.

Recommended Horror Books

I read three books in July. It’s been a busy month, and I haven’t had nearly enough time to read:

  • Devil of the Pines by James Kaine: This is brilliant and easily worth five stars. I’ve been on a James Kaine binge recently. Devil of the Pines follows a curse across three interwoven timelines. It’s an absolute masterclass.

  • Pursuit by James Kaine: There is a wonderful grindcore energy to James Kaine’s work, and Pursuit captures it perfectly. It’s an old school pulp story brought to a modern audience.

  • Mischief Night by James Kaine: This is a refreshing take on an old premise. A family under siege, with psychos loosed from the asylum. In the author’s notes, James says it was inspired by something he’d always wondered. What happened to the other mental patients who escaped in the film Halloween?

Greetings, my wicked darlings!

Happy Halloween or Samhain if you celebrate its original name. What did the Cryptkeeper always say? “Hello, boils and ghouls!” That seems appropriate.

It has been a busy Halloween, as it always is for every horror author. To celebrate, I sent three of my favourite stories set during the Halloween period: Re…

The Newt is healed. Well, mostly. A steady diet of chicken soup and green tea gut-punched the flu, and I’m back in action. I did write a story while fever struck, but it was not at the level of quality that I am happy publishing. Homicidal newts are fun and all, but perhaps fever isn’t always the best muse.

Greetings, my wicked darlings!

I’m sleep deprived and heavily caffeinated, but ecstatic.

Last month I published four short stories, albeit very short, some almost flash fiction. Having completed all the stories that I needed for TotM v4, I allowed myself to enter my ‘experimental’ or just ‘mental’ phase and write some of the more bizarre…

Greetings, my wicked darlings!

What a month! I am exhausted but utterly satisfied. June was rather limited on the short story front. I usually aim to release two, but only managed one. July, however, was far more productive, with a chonky release schedule of four free short stories and novellas released.
