2022 Recommended Horror Movies
A young woman discovers the rental home she booked is already occupied by a stranger. Against her better judgment, she decides to spend the night but soon discovers there's a lot more to fear than just an unexpected house guest.
This movie absolutely kept surprising me. Acts one, two and three could be completely separate episodes, each with their own plot arc. I really enjoyed it. You never know what to expect.
A hardworking dad out to provide for his daughter uses a boring pool-cleaning job as a front for his real gig: hunting and killing vampires.
A classic action horror in the style of From Dusk Till Dawn and Dawn of the Dead. Shut your brain off, open mouth, insert popcorn. It’s a fun little shooter with comedy elements.
Harper retreats to the countryside to be alone in the wake of a tragedy, but her unease at the town's leering and uncannily similar men grows into a fully fledged nightmare as her arrival awakens something primal in the forest.
Great Yarmouth is exactly the same experience. I am pretty sure we experience the same holiday every year. A very odd movie, with a wonderful charm to it. I think the title should really be 31 Flavours of Rory Kinnear. Or 50 Shades of Rory Kinnear? Hmmm… Answers on a postcard please.
Trapped on an isolated farm, Pearl must tend to her ailing father under the watch of her mother. Lusting for the glamorous life she's seen in movies, Pearl's temptations and repressions collide.
As a prequel to the movie X, I expected this to be a pale imitation. But I actually really, really liked it. It’s spunky and fun, I found myself relating to the villainess Pearl more than is socially acceptable.
The horrors of modern dating are seen through the eyes of a young woman who is battling to survive her new boyfriend's unusual appetites.
Having used the app Grindr, nothing surprises me anymore. But this movie was a ton of fun. I did however spend most of it rooting for the side character Mollie, played by Jojo T. Gibbs. She was my favourite and I want to see a eight series TV show based around her.
After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can't explain. As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life, Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.
Toby was glad I watched this at home and not at the cinema, because he complains that I laugh at the most inappropriate moments. He also doesn’t like my laugh. I’m beginning to think that Toby isn’t a very good friend, but this is a very good movie and I loved it.
Foo Fighters, the legendary rock band, move into a mansion in Encino to complete their new album. But Dave Grohl becomes possessed by supernatural forces and becomes a threat to all others.
If it wasn’t for the Foo Fighters (RIP Taylor Hawkins) then this movie would be exceptionally mediocre. But I could watch the Foo’s in a six hour laundry advert and be entertained. The plot is derivative and predictable, the acting veers between wooden and OTT camp, the special effects vary in quality.
But it is great. So ignore all of that and watch it anyway. Dave, call me back. I love you. I suspect your PA is passing on my fruit baskets. Call me!
Resurrected by a sinister entity, Art the Clown returns to Miles County to terrorize a teenage girl and her younger brother on Halloween night.
I have to confess that I discovered Terrifier 1 only after seeing the promotion for Terrifier 2. So I watched them back to back and really enjoyed them both. I felt that the hero’s journey plot for Terrifier 2 was a bit on the nose but all the actors were having such a great time that I totally got wrapped up in it and enjoyed it none the less.
A filmmaking crew and the cast make an adult movie at a reclusive place but elderly hosts find them and try to kill them.
I chose this for movie night because it mentioned an adult movie, but ended up really enjoying both this movie and its prequel Pearl. Watch them back to back they’re great. It also features Jenny Ortega of Wednesday fame (should I have reviewed Wednesday? It isn’t a movie, but I did enjoy it. I feel we had a ton of good horror series in 2022. Maybe I’ll review them in the new year.
