Newt's Nightmares
Greetings, my wicked darlings!
Happy Halloween or Samhain if you celebrate its original name. What did the Cryptkeeper always say? âHello, boils and ghouls!â That seems appropriate.
It has been a busy Halloween, as it always is for every horror author. To celebrate, I sent three of my favourite stories set during the Halloween period: Respect, The Road Revenant, Gomorrah. Which was your favourite? Let me know by pinging me an email.
In Scotland, people would peel apples in one strip (it took me several attempts) and throw the peel over their shoulder to reveal the initial of their future husband. The only thing it revealed to me was that my husband will be a complete mess.
In Wales, people believed that spirits called âYsbrydionâ (try pronouncing that) roamed the land, and bonfires were lit to ward them off.
But enough facts, Iâve been writing, talking, chatting, and pondering about my future. Iâm looking forward to continuing that at the Horror Writersâ Association Halloween party tonight (come and join us, itâs at The Angel near Tottenham Court Road Station, from 19:30). Tales of the Macabre 1â4, or its collective name, The Macabre Codex, has been such a huge part of my life for the last three years. Before that, I wrote a novel, Nestor Lynch, which has many flaws, but it was only one of four novels Iâve written in my career and set me up as an author.
What next? Well, Iâm not sure. Iâve been writing and experimenting with my next new project, which I am hoping will be long form. But, me being me, Iâve already written three more short stories.
The other consideration is fiscal, what with the cost-of-living crisis. So, Iâm investigating Patreon and Substack Premium. What do you think, my dears?

You know what we Finns say, that 'if you succeed in peeling an apple without the strip cutting it in pieces, you'll get married sooner.' I appreciate your upgrade more than mine. I don't even know what I'm to think of all those peeled apples, each prediction clashing with the previous one.
