Mind Games was originally published in Tales of the Macabre, Vol. 3.
This was written at an interesting point in my life. I’d had a mental breakdown and was on medication that messed with my head. I was bouncing between therapists and, at the time, was in discussions over whether I was going to be committed to what is politely called, in the modern vernacular, a mental health ward, but is, in actual fact, an asylum.
Writing Tales of the Macabre, Vol. 3 was the only thing that kept me sane. During the production of the book, I was finally able to kick the medication.
I made the decision to leave London and move to the country to restore my original, somewhat dubious levels of sanity.
I think the mental illness and hyperfocus were what made Tales of the Macabre, Vol. 3 so experimental. I wrote it in six months. Usually, my books take nine. So it is a very different beast to its predecessors, volumes one and two.
Mind Games was loosely based on my experience and fears of therapy.
