Greetings, my wicked darlings!
What happened in July? The sun boiled my brain. That’s what happened.
I think I confused everyone by releasing a remake of my dark fantasy story, Shadow of the Wolf, with the same title and a suspiciously similar cover.
Was that a stupid idea? Absolutely. Will I learn from it? Deeply unlikely.
Let’s try again, this time with coffee:
Shadow of the Wolf: Dark Fantasy Edition
The original version. Lighter, more comedic, with a Templar based on a friend’s D&D character, which was itself inspired by The Tick.
Shadow of the Wolf: Medieval Horror Edition
The completely rewritten version. Grim, violent, and set during the Anarchy, when the forces of Empress Matilda battled Stephen of Blois. No, I can’t pronounce Blois either. I assume it is pronounced something like ‘blah’, being French. In the audio version, I will employ professional cowardice to avoid that word.
If you are still with me after all that bumf, then I applaud your tenacity and am grateful for your fortitude.
I also released two other stories, both novellas: Outpost U-819 Must DIE! (Read Online | Download ePub / PDF) and A Bunker Too Far (Read Online | Download ePub / PDF). Thank you to everyone who read them. They received a very warm welcome, you sick puppies.
Coming in August
Full Beam. A classic urban legend retold, involving a lonely road, a Mercedes, a van, and some aggressive use of headlights.
The Last of the Kings. Another uplifting tale in which members of the financial sector suffer entirely proportionate and regrettable consequences.
I have two particularly unpleasant contenders for the final slot. I have not yet decided which one you deserve, my wonderful little toads.
September’s newsletter will reveal the complete lineup for Tales of the Macabre, Vol. 5.

I read three books in July. It’s been a busy month, and I haven’t had nearly enough time to read:
Devil of the Pines by James Kaine: This is brilliant and easily worth five stars. I’ve been on a James Kaine binge recently. Devil of the Pines follows a curse across three interwoven timelines. It’s an absolute masterclass.
Pursuit by James Kaine: There is a wonderful grindcore energy to James Kaine’s work, and Pursuit captures it perfectly. It’s an old school pulp story brought to a modern audience.
Mischief Night by James Kaine: This is a refreshing take on an old premise. A family under siege, with psychos loosed from the asylum. In the author’s notes, James says it was inspired by something he’d always wondered. What happened to the other mental patients who escaped in the film Halloween?
